U.S. President Donald Trump has endorsed NATO’s decision to boost defense and security spending commitments to 5% of GDP by 2035, calling it a crucial advancement for the alliance. This increase marks a significant rise from the previous target of 2% GDP, agreed upon during the NATO Summit in The Hague set for 2025.

During his address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Trump emphasized the importance of this commitment, which will see NATO allies allocate at least 3.5% of GDP to core defense needs and an additional 1.5% to defense-related investments and other security measures. This strategic shift is aimed at enhancing military capabilities and collective security across the alliance.

NATO has already reported progress toward this objective, noting that European allies and Canada collectively raised their core defense spending by nearly 20% in real terms by 2025 compared to the previous year. This increase is part of a broader effort to bolster defense production and military strength among member nations.

In his remarks, Trump also addressed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, advocating for an end to the war due to its severe human toll. He assured that the United States would continue its diplomatic efforts to mediate and resolve the situation.

The 5% GDP commitment underscores NATO’s long-term strategy to secure and enhance its defense posture, reflecting a unified response to evolving global security challenges. This initiative is crucial as the alliance seeks to maintain stability and deter potential threats in the coming years.
