Yemen’s Houthi rebels have taken responsibility for a series of missile and drone attacks targeting key sites in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, sparking explosions and a fire near King Khalid International Airport. The Saudi military confirmed that its air defenses intercepted one of the missiles, and an all-clear was subsequently issued following the incident.

The attacks prompted Saudi authorities to issue air raid alerts in Riyadh and other cities, marking the first such warnings since the conflict with the Houthis intensified in July. Flames and thick black smoke were reported near the airport as emergency teams responded to a fire involving a fuel tank.

The Houthi group stated that the assaults were in retaliation against Saudi military action in Yemen, claiming that Saudi forces had conducted numerous airstrikes on their positions in recent days. This escalation has raised concerns about the security of civilian and energy infrastructure within Saudi Arabia, with the United Nations Security Council condemning the attacks and urging measures to prevent the Houthis from acquiring further military resources.

Tensions in the region have been heightened by ongoing conflicts involving Iran, the United States, and their allies. The renewed hostilities are also threatening shipping and energy supplies in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital international maritime corridor.

In light of the heightened conflict, Washington has advised American citizens in the region to exercise increased caution. As the situation develops, the international community remains watchful of potential impacts on regional stability and global energy markets.
