Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin is set to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week, emphasizing the critical role of multilateralism in addressing global conflicts and enhancing international cooperation. Martin’s discussions will prominently feature the ongoing Middle East challenges, with a focus on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank.

During his visit, Martin plans to meet with various UN agencies to evaluate the dire conditions in Gaza, where destruction and restricted humanitarian aid access remain pressing issues. As winter approaches, he underscored the urgency of providing adequate shelter for affected populations.

In addition to the Middle East, Martin’s agenda will also cover the war in Ukraine and the increasing challenges posed by artificial intelligence. These topics will be central to his participation in the UN’s High-Level Week, which gathers world leaders under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.”

Martin will deliver Ireland’s national statement on Thursday, aiming to reinforce Ireland’s commitment to international dialogue and problem-solving. Foreign Affairs Minister Helen McEntee and other Irish officials will accompany Martin, engaging in discussions on issues including Afghanistan, international development, and humanitarian assistance.
