Kate O’Connor of Ireland has surged to the forefront in the women’s heptathlon standings after the first two events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 25-year-old athlete impressed with a season-best high jump of 1.82 meters, sharing the top spot in that event and amassing a total of 2,047 points, which places her just four points ahead of her closest competitor, England’s Jade O’Dowda.
Earlier in the competition, O’Connor clocked 13.54 seconds in the 100m hurdles, securing third place. Her time was just shy of her personal record by a mere 0.10 seconds, setting a strong tone for her performance in the opening day of the heptathlon.
The heptathlon continues with events such as the shot put and 200m scheduled for Tuesday. The competition will conclude on Wednesday with the long jump, javelin throw, and the 800m run. O’Connor is considered one of the leading contenders for the gold medal, especially following the withdrawal of reigning champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who is unable to compete due to injury.
O’Connor’s strong start at the Commonwealth Games positions her as a prime candidate for the podium. Her performances in the remaining events will determine whether she can maintain her lead and secure a gold medal for Ireland in this multi-discipline track and field event.
