Members of Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP delegation in the European Parliament have raised concerns over the European Commission’s silence regarding recent changes in Hungary that they believe threaten democratic institutions. During a joint session of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, Hungarian MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the Commission to address issues such as constitutional amendments, restrictions on political competition, and modifications affecting parliamentary mandates and the independence of state institutions.
The lawmakers pointed out that the Commission had previously expressed rule-of-law concerns and withheld EU funding from Hungary but has not taken a stance on the latest developments. They questioned the compatibility of Hungary’s recent constitutional changes with European democratic standards. The delegation emphasized that democratic principles should be uniformly applied across all EU member states.
FIDESZ–KDNP representatives stressed the importance of the Commission’s clarification on these matters, as they believe the ongoing constitutional and political changes in Hungary could undermine the democratic fabric of the nation. The lack of response from the Commission during the hearing left the Hungarian lawmakers seeking more concrete answers.
Throughout the meeting, the FIDESZ–KDNP delegation underscored the necessity for the European Commission to engage actively with these issues. They argue that understanding whether Hungary’s constitutional shifts align with broader European democratic values is crucial. However, Commission representatives did not deliver detailed answers to the inquiries made during the session.
