Ireland is gearing up for a Seanad bye-election to fill a vacant seat on the Cultural and Educational Panel, following the return of Fine Gael’s Seán Kyne to the Dáil. This vacancy emerged after Kyne’s successful election in the Galway West bye-election held in May.

The nomination period for candidates will conclude on October 6, with the distribution of ballot papers scheduled for October 23. Eligible voters, comprising 234 members from both the Dáil and Seanad, will cast their votes by November 6, 2026, determining the outcome of this internal election process.

Fine Gael has put forward Ray McAdam as their candidate for the vacant seat. McAdam, a former Dublin City Lord Mayor and city councillor, previously participated in the Dublin Central Dáil bye-election in May, showcasing his continued political engagement.

The bye-election will be decided by members of the Oireachtas, reflecting the unique nature of the Seanad’s vocational panels, which do not require a public vote. As the nomination deadline approaches, other political parties are still contemplating potential candidates, engaging in discussions within opposition ranks.
