In a bid to bolster regional ties and advance the European Union membership prospects of Western Balkan nations, leaders from both regions convened in Tivat, Montenegro. This summit, which took place six months after their prior gathering in Brussels, centered around the theme “Shared Prosperity and Stability of the EU and the Western Balkans.” The primary focus was on EU enlargement, economic integration, and security cooperation, all amidst a backdrop of increasing geopolitical challenges.
EU officials reiterated their dedication to the Western Balkans’ aspirations for EU membership, taking stock of the progress made in integrating these nations into the EU’s economic framework. A major point of discussion was the 2023-launched Growth Plan for the Western Balkans. This plan promises up to €6 billion in funding to aid reforms, stimulate investments, and encourage closer participation in the EU’s single market.
Further discussions delved into enhancing cooperation on foreign policy, defense, and cybersecurity. With particular emphasis on the latter, leaders examined ways to fortify the region against cyber threats, disinformation campaigns, and other forms of foreign interference.
The summit underscored the EU’s significant role as the Western Balkans’ largest trading partner, investor, and donor. It also highlighted the necessity for ongoing reforms and regional cooperation, pivotal steps for these countries as they edge closer to potential EU membership.
