A court in New Mexico has mandated that Meta must contribute $567 million to a fund designed to tackle the mental health issues reportedly stemming from its social media platforms and affecting children. This decision comes after a jury in March determined that Meta was aware of its role in harming children’s mental health and did not sufficiently address child sexual exploitation on its platforms. With this recent judgment, Meta’s total financial obligation in the case now amounts to $942 million.
Of the $567 million awarded by the court, $420 million is specifically allocated to the provision of mental health treatment services for young people within New Mexico. The remainder of the funds is intended to support various initiatives such as prevention and awareness programs, screening services, and other protective measures to be implemented over the next five years.
Additionally, the court has instructed Meta to enhance child safety protocols on its social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram. This includes improving age-verification systems, offering clearer guidance on safety and privacy tools, and developing methods to identify users who might be under the age of 13. Furthermore, Meta is tasked with collaborating with schools or child-safety organizations to establish a system for reporting accounts suspected of being used by children under 13. The company is also required to delete personal information collected from these users and submit biannual progress reports on their compliance with these mandates.
However, the court decided against enforcing a universal age verification system exclusively for New Mexico, citing fairness concerns and existing federal privacy laws protecting children. Despite the ruling, Meta has expressed its intention to appeal, asserting that it is committed to user protection and has already taken steps to mitigate harmful content and address online safety issues.
This case is part of a broader legal challenge facing Meta, as it continues to confront allegations that its platforms may have detrimental effects on young users. Similar lawsuits are currently underway in other states across the United States.
