Heathrow Airport has ceded its status as Europe’s busiest airport to Istanbul Airport, which handled more passengers in July. Istanbul Airport welcomed 8.15 million travelers, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million during the same period. This shift highlights a 1.5% decline in passenger numbers for Heathrow compared to July of the previous year, while Istanbul experienced a 2.3% increase.
The drop in Heathrow’s passenger traffic has been partly attributed to disruptions stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. This situation has intensified calls for the UK government to approve the proposed third runway at Heathrow. Currently operating with two runways at nearly full capacity, the airport’s planned £33 billion expansion could potentially increase its annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism.
In contrast, Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and continuous operations. It is currently equipped with three runways, with a fourth expected to become operational by the end of 2026. This capacity expansion underscores Istanbul Airport’s growing influence in the European aviation sector.
Meanwhile, other UK airports like London Stansted and Manchester have reported their busiest-ever July. Stansted handled 3.1 million passengers, while Manchester saw 3.4 million, indicating a robust demand for air travel in the region despite the challenges Heathrow faces.
