This summer’s intense heatwaves have led to over 35,000 excess deaths across Europe, a figure expected to rise as more countries finalize their assessments. The heat was most deadly in Germany, France, and Spain, which together account for more than 25,000 of these deaths. Germany experienced approximately 14,000 heat-related deaths from April to early August, marking its most lethal summer due to heat since records have been kept. Spain reported nearly 5,000 deaths attributed to heat since May, also setting a new record for the country.
France reported around 7,300 excess deaths from late May to July. However, this figure is still preliminary and does not account for August. Other European nations such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have similarly seen significant mortality increases during the extreme heat periods.
The heatwaves saw temperatures soar above 40°C across extensive areas of western and central Europe, setting numerous national and local temperature records. Scientists point to climate change as a factor that is making such extreme heat events more frequent and intense, highlighting the growing risks to public health.
Identifying heat-related deaths poses challenges since extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing health conditions like cardiovascular and respiratory issues, instead of being recorded as the direct cause of death. As delayed mortality data continues to roll in and August’s figures become available, experts anticipate the overall death toll in Europe will climb further.
The sheer number of deaths underscores the urgent public health threat posed by increasingly severe heatwaves, prompting calls for more effective measures to mitigate the impact of future extreme weather events.
