The European Union is set to boost its support for Azerbaijan with a substantial financial package aimed at enhancing the nation’s infrastructure. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has committed up to €200 million in grants to Azerbaijan. This funding is anticipated to catalyze approximately €2 billion in additional public and private investments. The announcement was made during von der Leyen’s discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, where they explored avenues for bolstering energy collaboration and regional connectivity.
In a move to deepen ties, von der Leyen put forward the idea of a new connectivity partnership between the EU and Azerbaijan. The partnership aims to strengthen links in transport, energy, and digital sectors. President Aliyev highlighted the progress already made in energy cooperation, noting that Azerbaijani gas exports to EU member states have surged by about 65% following a 2022 energy agreement. Currently, ten EU countries are recipients of Azerbaijani gas, illustrating the growing energy partnership between the regions.
Beyond energy and infrastructure, the European Commission President also unveiled a €20 million support program targeting border communities. This initiative is designed to improve healthcare services, facilitate mine clearance, and support rural development and small businesses. Such efforts are intended to foster stability and economic growth in these regions.
The meeting in Baku also touched upon the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process, with both leaders expressing commitment to advancing dialogue and cooperation. Von der Leyen’s visit to Azerbaijan is part of a broader tour of the South Caucasus, with plans to engage in further talks in Armenia. These discussions underscore the EU’s strategic interest in enhancing relationships and fostering stability in this geopolitically significant area.
